In the past, it served as the headquarters for podestas, captains, the Great Council, and other town offices.
It was built on the location of two older houses from the mid-13th century which were previously connected with a loggia. The building was renovated several times, and received its current appearance in the second half of the 15th century. The prevailing style of the building is the late Gothic-Renaissance and the Venetian Gothic style, while it obtained its final image in the Baroque period.
In addition to the sessions of the municipal council and ceremonial receptions, numerous other councils, meetings, round tables, workshops, and lectures also take place in the palace, while different exhibitions can be viewed on the ground floor. The wedding hall of the Praetorian Palace is the official space for civil weddings in the Koper Administrative Unit.
